Hello, I go by the name Bookish Jen around these parts and welcome to my blog The Book Self where I post, you guessed it, book reviews.
I’ve been an avid reader since I was a little girl and getting my first library card was probably a more monumental occasion than getting my driver’s license (and I’m a better reader than driver). I’m interested in all kinds of books-novels, short stories, essay collections, how-tos, memoirs, non-fiction and so on. You name the genre and I’ve probably read it.
I started The Book Self in October of 2013. Not only do I write book reviews I write various opinion pieces on the world of books, writing, media, pop culture, blogging, authors and writers, some of it complimentary, some of it not so complimentary. I provide links to all kinds of topics regarding books, writers and writing, media, book stories, libraries, the publishing trade and anything else that might better inform my faithful readers. In Retro Reviews I read or re-read books that have been out for at least 20 years, some classics and some guilty pleasure reads. In Reading to Reels I review books based on movies. And because the cliché “A Picture is Worth a Thousand Words” is quite true my Graphic and Novel series provides interesting visuals and memes regarding all things fun, inspiring, witty, thoughtful and bittersweet about the wonders of the written world.
The Book Self has gained praise from some very notable and talented writers, including author, Berkeley lecturer and Secretary of Labor under President Clinton, Robert Reich, Emmy-award winning documentarians of Hollywood’s golden age, David Heeley and Joan Kramer, journalist and news producer, Joe Muto, Nation columnist, Katha Pollitt, stand-up comedian and blogger, Samantha Irby, and Wisconsin-based writer and educational activist Jennifer Morales. Novelists like Melanie Thorne and Mike Adelberg have also extended their kudos. And I can’t forget writers living across the big pond like Rosie Blythe, Robert Kelsey and Deborah Ollivier.
At a steady pace The Book Self has gained a wonderful group of followers and I am grateful for all of the support. The world of writing and blogging can be a lonely one, and my followers never forget to make me feel valued.
You can also drop me a line at firstname.lastname@example.org. And don’t be afraid to suggest a book or even write a book review yourself. I’m always open to guest reviews. Thanks!!!!
